The Sermon:
I want to show you this *pan. It has been used a lot, especially for ____________. Does your mother have a special pan that she uses a lot or maybe a special pan for certain things like soup, spaghetti, or potatoes?
Would she use it if it were dirty? No! She'd make sure it was clean before she ever put it away, all ready to use the next time.
The Bible talks about useful pans and dishes in 2 Timothy 2:20-21, "In a large house there are utensils not only of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for special use, some for ordinary. All who cleanse themselves ... will become special utensils, dedicated and useful to the owner of the house, ready for every good work."
This says most houses have all kinds of dishes and pans. Some are very fancy for special use, like when we have company. Some are plain and ordinary like the ones we use every day, but all should be clean and ready to use. This is telling us that we are like those pans and dishes. We can be used to do good work for Jesus, if we are clean.
This is Mother's Day. Mothers work hard to keep things clean and to keep you clean, too. They also teach us things we need to know to get along in life. We are thankful for our mothers and for all they do to keep us clean. Mothers will teach you and see that you are clean on the outside, but only you can decide to keep your inside, your hearts, and your mind clean.
What makes for unclean or dirty hearts and minds? How about lying, cheating, quarreling, or hurting someone with what we say or do? Even bad thoughts are not clean. How can we be clean and useful to Jesus like a good dish or pan?
First, we must love Jesus as our Savior. Then we try hard to do and be the kind of person he wants. When we fail, we are sorry and ask him to forgive us.
Just as there are all kinds of dishes and pans, there are all kinds of people and every one has his or her own special talents and abilities. The important thing is to be clean and useful, serving Jesus in our own special way.
You don't have to be all grown up to be useful to Jesus. You can be the kind, loving person he wants and every one of God's people should want to be useful in God's service.
Tell your mother, "Thank you," for all the work she does and I am certain that if you'll keep clean outside and inside, you'll please her very much.
