Location: Mark 9:42
Verse: And whosoever shall offend [cause to stumble] one of these little ones that believe in me [to lose faith], it is better for him [that person] that a millstone were hanged about his [that person's] neck, and he [that person] were cast into the sea.
The well-known professional athlete was looked up to by many young people as their great hero. True, the athlete was an outstanding ballplayer who exemplified the greatest skills in playing the game. But the wrongful, immoral teaching he gave the young people through his life's example damaged their thinking and actions. Role models have an opportunity to set a good example.
These young people who were led astray might say when finding themselves in darkness and in the bottomless pit, "I feel as though a millstone is around my neck." It certainly can be said about the one who caused those to stumble. This expression is in the Bible.
A millstone during biblical times was a heavy stone slab which was turned by a donkey in grinding grain.
Jesus is teaching that no one should damage the faith of another by being a poor witness.
