THE WONDER OF WORDS: BOOK 2
ONE-HUNDRED MORE WORDS AND PHRASES SHAPING HOW CHRISTIANS THINK AND LIVE
Many years ago, begins an old Chinese story, there was a man who had a horse and one son. One day his horse broke out of the corral and fled to the freedom of the hills. "Your horse got out? What bad luck!" said his neighbors. "Why?" the old man asked. "How do you know it's bad luck? Sure enough, the next day the horse came back to his familiar corral for his usual feeding and watering. The horse was leading twelve wild stallions with him. The farmer's son saw the thirteen horses in the corral, slipped out, and locked the gate. Suddenly, the old Chinese man had thirteen horses instead of none. The neighbors heard the news and came chattering to the farmer, "Oh, you've got thirteen horses! What good luck!" The old man answered, "How do you know that it's good luck?" Some days later, his strong young son was trying to break one of the stallions. He was thrown from the horse and broke his leg. The neighbors came back that night and passed another hasty judgment: "Your son broke his leg? What bad luck." The wise father answered them: "How do you know it's bad luck?" Sure enough, a few days later, a Chinese war lord came through the town and conscripted every able-bodied young man, taking them off to war from which they never returned. However, the young son of the farmer was saved from that deadly journey because of his broken leg. Once more the neighbors came to rejoice with the farmer in his good luck and once more the old man said, "How do you know this is good luck?"
The story ends there, although it could go on forever. See the truth in this story: if God alone is ultimate, then God alone is final. If God alone is final, then no event is final, nor can it be properly appraised on the day it happens. No day is good, no day is bad, until all the days are in and life adds them up together. Trust God, therefore, and remember: "There's always tomorrow!"
