One day Jesus sat in the garden with a friend. The air was still. The garden was quiet. Neither of the two men spoke. Suddenly Jesus closed his eyes. His friend became sad because he knew that Jesus was far away from him, and when Jesus closed his eyes to pray, he received a special power. Oh, how he wanted this same power -- more than anything in the world! Jesus' friend was very strong, but he knew Jesus had a special strength that gave him great courage. He wanted to know that secret! Yet he had never asked Jesus. The man thought to himself, "He would refuse me. He would laugh at me," and so the man was afraid to ask.
When Jesus opened his eyes, the man looked into them and saw compassion and love and wondered why he had been afraid. He knew Jesus loved him, but did he love him enough to tell him the secret of his power? The man shook his head, sadly. But when he looked at Jesus again, he knew that part of that power was his love. He stuttered as he spoke, "I ... I ... would you ... could you ..."
Then all in one breath, he said, "Would you share the secret of your power?"
Jesus looked up at him and smiled, and said, "When you pray, say, 'Our Father who is in heaven, blessed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our wrongs, as we forgive those who do us wrong. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory!' This is the secret of my power, my prayer."
Prayer: Let us pray together now, using the words Jesus used, which we call "The Lord's Prayer." Amen.
