Look Ahead!

Object:
A variety of summer items: for example beach towels, sunglasses, suntan lotion, a cooler, and so forth.
Message: Can you believe the cold weather we have been having lately? The wind is blowing. People have been saying how cold they feel. The weather men say this might even continue for a while longer. Well, this morning I brought along a number of items that are just perfect for this type of weather. (Show each of the items listed above.) I'll bet you think I am pretty confused about things. These are all items for the summer! What types of things do you think I should have brought today? (Allow the children to answer with responses such as: hats, sweaters, coats, etc.)
I'm not as confused as you might think. Have you noticed that every year during the winter the television commercials start showing us people who are at the beach? We see people swimming, playing games on the beach, and really enjoying the warm weather. In fact, when I went to the store the other day, they were already selling their bathing suits for next summer, and here we are in the middle of winter! Do you know why they do that? They want us to look and plan ahead ... not to simply look at today, but also to look at how we can get ready for the next season to come.
As Christians we need to be doing the same thing in our lives. Just as those commercials want us to start thinking about the future, God wants us to be thinking about the future, too. He doesn't want us to be worried about what might happen, but He does want us to look with confidence to the time when He will fulfill His promises to us.
In the Book of Romans the Bible tells us that the whole creation - everything God made - is waiting with great excitement for the day of Jesus' return. At that time we will enter His Kingdom and He wants us to share in that excitement! We need to trust Him today to care for us. We also need to look ahead, because in heaven we will get to see and live with Jesus. That is going to be more exciting than anything we have ever experienced in our whole lives!
