Levi, the Publican
Drama
I Met Jesus When He Was Born
DRAMATIC MONOLOGUES FOR ADVENT
"All went to be taxed."
My name is Levi. I am a Jew, born of the tribe of Naphtali. For the past twelve years, I have been a publican in Capernaum.
Let me tell you what it's like to be a publican. We collect taxes from our own people and forward the revenue to the Roman officials. Rather than retain a percentage of the payments for ourselves, we keep everything over the amount demanded by the Romans. This means that the more we can collect, the more we increase our own income.
