A LANTERN
Worship
SYMBOLS OF SACRIFICE
Year 3, Lenten Congregational Resources
Preparation: Each week during the Lenten season we are asking
church members to present a symbol of sacrifice. The Lenten
season is a time of penitence as we bring before God the
brokenness of our lives asking for God's healing and forgiveness.
Each week a symbol of the sacrifice that Jesus made will be
presented. As we remember his body broken these symbols will
remind us of the forgiveness his sacrificial death made possible.
Thank you for your willingness to share in worship in this
way. After the opening portion of the worship service one of the
pastors will invite you to come forward. Please come to the
lectern on the north side. Present the symbol with the readings
below and place the symbol on the first available post on that
side. Then lead us in prayer and return to your seat.
Individually or with others in the days before Sunday share
what the symbol of sacrifice symbolizes for you. In what ways are
you feeling penitent and in what areas of your life are you
needing healing and forgiveness?
Come To The Lectern And
Read: John 3:20-22 -- Jesus said, "For all who do evil hate the
light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not
be exposed. But those who do what is true come to the light, so
that it may be clearly seen that the deeds have been done in
God."
Share: Jesus wanted his followers to live in the light. He did
not want them to be ashamed, hiding in shadows for fear they
would be seen. Jesus loved his followers and knew they were
worthy of standing in the light. We still teach our children
to sing with confidence, "This little light of mine, I'm going to
let it shine." This lantern is a reminder of our worth in the
light of God.
Place: The lantern on the first available post. After the
offering has been received and the Doxology sung:
Pray: God, may our gifts turn on the light of understanding in
darkened minds, the light of your path for wayward feet, the
light of creativity in stagnant persons and the light of joy in
our lives. Amen.
