In the garden near Joseph of Arimathea's tomb
(Joseph of Arimathea is standing in the garden near the tomb with its stone rolled away)
Joseph: Good morning. I am Joseph. Not the Genesis Joseph who visited you in your Lenten series this year. Nor am I Joseph, the husband of Mary, stepfather of our Lord.
They called me Joseph of Arimathea. I was from the town of Arimathea once called Ramah. I am a member of the Sanhedrin. I objected to the decision by the Sanhedrin to put Jesus to death. I was a secret believer in this Jesus of Nazareth. I was fearful of making my allegiance to Jesus public. But I was compelled to be more courageous when I saw what they did to Jesus. When I saw the crucifixion last Friday, a part of me died right there, too. It was horrible. And the weeping and wailing of the women who loved him so stabbed my soul.
So the least I could do was to go to Pilate and beg for the body of Jesus. I didn't want them to throw him into a burial pit like a dog. Governor Pilate agreed. I took his body to my personal tomb right here in this garden cemetery. I had this tomb hewn out of this rock for me. I was glad to offer it for him. But now I am really confused. They say his body is gone! The guards were speechless. Oh, here's one of the women.
(to Mary Magdalene) Hello!
Mary Magdalene: Oh, hello yourself. Who are you?
Joseph: Joseph. Joseph of Arimathea. I'm a member of the Sanhedrin.
Mary: Oh. You're the one. This is your tomb where they laid the body of Jesus.
Joseph: Yes.
Mary: Oh, thank you so much, but ...
Joseph: But what?
Mary: His body is gone!
Joseph: I know. I can't understand it.
Mary: Three of us Marys were at the cross when Jesus died.
Joseph: Three of you Marys?
Mary: Yes, Jesus' mother Mary, Jesus' Aunt Mary of Clopas, and me, Mary Magdalene.
Joseph: Well, I just can't understand it. Jesus'abody is gone.
Mary: I know. Could it be?
Joseph: Could it be what?
Mary: Aah, I was just thinking ...
Joseph: Thinking?
Mary: Well, I just talked to what I thought was the gardener, but ...
Joseph: But what, Mary Magdalene?
Mary: It was he!
Joseph: Jesus? Really?
Mary: (quietly) Yes, it was Jesus. As alive as you and me.
Joseph: Oh, my!
Mary: Yes.
(a noise is heard in the bushes nearby; a man dressed like a villain in a melodrama leaps out)
Evil Spirit: Ha, Ha! I'm back!
Mary: Pay no attention to him, Joseph.
Joseph: Who is he? Shall I call one of the guards that was here a while ago?
Mary: No, no. I'll deal with him.
Evil Spirit: I'm back. Heh, heh.
Mary: What you see is not real. He's a fake. He's a mirage. He is powerless. He is one of the seven evil spirits Jesus cast out of me back when I first met Jesus.
Joseph: I'll get my sword.
Mary: Never mind. (to Evil Spirit) Get out of here, you wisp of smoke. You're no longer anything.
Evil Spirit: Oh, yes, I can still make you doubt.
Mary: Doubt?
Evil Spirit: Yes --adoubt what you're just starting to believe.
Mary: You mean that Jesus is actually alive?
Evil Spirit: They stole his body. It's somewhere.
Mary: So you think you still have power to make us doubt? Get out of here!
(Evil Spirit disappears)
Mary: (to Joseph) He's gone. At least for now.
Joseph: Thank goodness. I almost believed him for a moment!
Mary: I know. He'll be back. Relentless. Dogged. Persistent. But ... oh, somebody's coming ... I wonder who it is?
Joseph: Could it be?
Mary: Oh....
