The Sermon:
We have a story about Jesus and some of his disciples. These disciples made their living by catching fish. One night they had worked all night and had caught nothing. Then they saw Jesus and he told them to go back out on the water in their boat and then to let down their nets again. This time they would catch fish. The disciples probably were tired from working all night and they could have refused to go, but they *obeyed Jesus and caught fish, more than ever before. There were so many fish that the nets began to break. A good thing happened because they obeyed Jesus. When Simon Peter saw how many fish they had, the Bible says in Luke 5:9-10, "... he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee who were partners with Simon."
They were amazed. They were very surprised. They were probably a little frightened, too, because then Jesus said, "Do not be afraid, from now on you will be catching people." Jesus said it in a little different way in Matthew 4:19, "Follow me, and I will make you fish for people." Good things will happen for us, too, if we obey Jesus and if we will follow Jesus we, too, can catch people. Why is this a good thing and how does it happen?
Following Jesus means to obey him and to live our lives like he wants us to live. We learn clean habits, we learn to love, we have joy, peace, and happiness. God's guidance helps us make good choices. We are kind and help others.
When others see our good lives, they want a happy life, too, and we show them by our lives how much Jesus can make them happy. When that happens, we have "caught them" for Jesus.
It has been many years ago that Jesus asked his disciples to follow him. We know that they did and because they obeyed Jesus and followed him, they have caught people. Good things have also happened for us all these years later. After Jesus left this earth, they continued to preach and teach. *They wrote down what he taught and did so that today we have everything we need to know here in our Bibles. We know about Jesus, his love, and that of God our Father in heaven.
We will talk about this one more time.
