A Service Of Commissioning
L: Today we, as a family in Christ Jesus our Lord, install those whom the Holy Spirit has called to a position of leadership among us. Those who will be serving the Lord as council members, newly elected members and those fulfilling their elected terms, are asked to come forward at this time to be installed for that ministry in our midst.
(Introduction of council members.)
L: Luke tells us in the Book of Acts that, as the number of disciples increased, complaints concerning the care of certain members of the body of believers were being overlooked by the Apostles. Therefore, the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, "It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the Word of God ..." In order to respond to the needs of the people, they were asked to choose from among them disciples of Christ who were known to be filled with the Spirit and wisdom. Those chosen were then given certain responsibilities to fulfill in order that the Apostles could carry out their ministry of prayer and the preaching of the Word.
God has called me, as your pastor, to serve in your midst, carrying out the ministry of Word and sacrament. Along with this comes a wide responsibility of other ministries. In order that the ministry at (name of church) might be full and a blessing to all, you have been called and set apart to assist in the leadership of the work of Christ in our congregation.
As elected and called council members, do you promise to be faithful in fulfilling your elected term to this position here at (name of church)?
C: Yes, and I ask God to help me.
L: Faithful attendance in worship and living out your call not only in church but in your daily life witnesses to the commitment you have made as disciples to Jesus Christ as Lord. Do you promise to let your light shine by your example?
C: Yes, and I ask God to help me.
L: In order to be rooted and grounded in faith, the Apostles diligently studied the Word and devoted their time to prayer. Do you promise to undergird our ministry through prayer and the study of the Word?
C: Yes, and I ask God to help me.
L: Congregation, please rise and bless your members along with me as they are installed for service among us.
All: We recognize your ministry as council members in our midst. God has chosen you to serve him and to carry out your duties that his perfect will will be done in the life of this congregation. We rejoice that he will bless you, and we promise to support you in prayer and to asssit you in our actions in ministry. May God bless and anoint you for this service. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
(Option. Council members kneel and are anointed with oil by the pastor.)
L: Go in peace, knowing God has blessed you and empowered you for service.
All: Amen.
