I am certain someone dreamed up the idea long before I encountered it in its tubular steel reality, but I like to think it started there, where I first saw it, in southern California, at Universal Studios, the land and place of illusion. Bars -- not the places you go to socialize (we have those here!) -- but steel bars, arranged so as to force large numbers of waiting people into serpentine columns. You see them everywhere now, even at your local fast-food restaurant.
