But I Wasn't There ... Ya Gotta Show Me!

Lent/Easter
You Are There was a real television show in the '50s: back in the days when even commercial television had some educational value. For reasons I don't understand, I can still hear Walter Cronkite ending the show with that line about "a day filled with the events that alter and illuminate our times."
This play comes about as close as I'm going to get to a Cecil B. DeMille, cast-of-thousands production. I pray that you will have some fun with it.

Director: (Offstage) Quiet on the set! Tape is rolling ...
Walter: Good evening ... I'm Walter Not-Tonight, and this is "You Are There!" Tonight, we take you back to the year 33 A.D., in the city of Jerusalem ... An astonishing event has just taken place in the area known as Solomon's Portico. A small band of followers of the man Jesus of Nazareth had been preaching in the streets about this carpenter/rabbi who was put to death by the religious leaders for the crime of blasphemy. Many signs and wonders have been reported, but the religious authorities are very disturbed. We take you now to Solomon's Portico, and our man in the streets, Marvin Mediaman. Take it away, Marvin.
Marvin: Thank you, Walter. I'm here with Simon Peter, the leader of this rag-tag band of Jesus-people. Mr. Peter, I understand that the high priest was very angry with you folks for preaching to the people about this man Jesus ...
Peter: Apparently so, Marvin. He had us arrested and put in the public prison.
Marvin: Wow, that's harsh! He threw you in the slammer, just for talking about this Jesus?
Peter: That's right. I think he and his associates are jealous, because the people are coming to us in droves to hear the good news of Jesus!
Marvin: Yes ... Well, you're not in jail now, Peter. What happened?
Peter: A miracle of the Lord happened, that's what! In the middle of the night, an angel of the Lord appeared to us. He opened the prison doors and told us to go and stand in the temple and tell the people the good news of Jesus. So that's what we're doing, Marvin.
Marvin: "The good news of Jesus"? What exactly is "the good news of Jesus"?
Peter: Jesus of Nazareth, God's anointed Messiah, was put to death on a cross by these same religious authorities who now threaten us. But on the third day, God raised Jesus from the dead, and exalted him at his right hand as King and Savior, so that he might bring repentance and forgiveness of sins and eternal life to all who believe in him.
Marvin: My goodness, that's quite a mouthful, Peter! Do you really believe that God raised this man Jesus from the dead?
Peter: Yes, I do. I saw it for myself.
Marvin: Well, that's nice for you, Peter ... Um, I see that you have a friend with you here. Sir, I believe you are the one known as "Doubting Thomas," is that right?
Thomas: Yes.
Marvin: Well, there must be a story behind that, Tom.
Thomas: Yes.
Marvin: You're quite the chatty one, aren't you, Thomas? Now, would you please tell us your story?
Thomas: Well ... After Jesus was put to death and buried, some women went to his tomb and found it empty. They said he had risen from the dead ... but I wouldn't believe, because I hadn't seen for myself ... Then, one evening as the disciples were gathered together behind locked doors -- we were all scared to death that the authorities were coming after us, you see -- Jesus just appeared in the room in the flesh! He gave them the gift of the Holy Spirit ... But I didn't happen to be there that night -- the baby had the colic, and my wife needed me to help the older kids with their homework ... So when I returned to the room with the guys later that night, they told me about all I had missed. But I refused to believe, because I hadn't seen for myself ... A week later, we were all together again, and Jesus appeared. He let me touch the wounds in his hands and in his side ... and I finally believed.
Marvin: So you didn't doubt any more, Thomas?
Thomas: No ... But I guess I'm stuck forever with that handle: "Doubting Thomas." But the fact remains that Jesus is real, he's alive, and he is King of kings and Lord of lords!
Marvin: Hmmm ... I see, I guess.
(Temple Guards enter stage right)
Guard 1: Come with us, you two! The High Priest has some words for you ... You're in deep doo-doo!
(Guards lead Peter and Thomas off stage right)
High Priest: (Offstage) Peter, you moron! We gave you strict orders not to teach in the name of this blasphemer Jesus, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching. And you seem to be determined to bring the blood of this Jesus on our heads!
Peter: (Offstage) I'm afraid you already brought that upon yourself, bubba! (Enters stage right, continuing to look and talk offstage) We must obey God rather than any human authority!
(Thomas joins Peter on stage. They begin to pantomime preaching to a crowd)
Marvin: There you have it, folks: Simon Peter, a Galilean fisherman who once was so scared of the church authorities that he locked himself away in an upper room, and Doubting Thomas, who once refused to believe because he hadn't seen for himself. Together, they are challenging the powerful Sanhedrin and preaching about this carpenter/rabbi from Nazareth ... Back to you, Walter.
Walter: Thank you, Marvin ... We've been in first-century Palestine, on a momentous occasion. What kind of day was it? A day like any other: filled with the events that alter and illuminate our times ... and You Were There!
(Director enters stage left)
Director: Cut ... That's a wrap. Good work, people! (Points to Thomas) Cute ad-lib about the kid with the colic, Harry ... I liked it! ... Now, listen up, people. Scripts for next week's segment are in my office. Pick 'em up, and study fast. First run-through is tomorrow at 3 p.m. sharp.
(Director exits stage right. Peter/Charlie and Thomas/Harry start taking off their costumes)
Marvin: Whew! I'm glad that one's over ... This religious stuff gives me gas! Charlie, you did a nice job today. You gave Peter's lines like you really believed it.
Charlie: I do believe it, Marvin. Don't you?
Marvin: Naw ... I'm like ol' Thomas there. I'm Marvin from Missouri, and ya gotta show me!
Harry: Marvin, do you know what Jesus said to Thomas after Thomas finally saw and believed?
Marvin: No ... What?
Harry: He said, "Thomas, have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe."
Marvin: So?
Charlie: He's talking about you and me, Marvin. We weren't there 2,000 years ago, when Jesus walked the earth -- but if we have come to believe in him, Jesus says we are blessed.
Marvin: I can't believe you two guys really swallow all that junk! Especially you, Harry. You seem like such a common-sense kinda guy!
Harry: I wasn't sure that I did believe, until I did some reading to get ready for this part, Marvin. I guess that's why I can identify with poor old Doubting Thomas. But the more I read -- and the more I talked to Charlie here (Puts his arm around Charlie), the more I came to believe.
Marvin: Well, that's okay for you guys. It's a nice little story, but I'm not buyin'! (Starts to exit stage right) I gotta go pick up my script for next week ... I'm playing some Bible character named Job. Anybody know anything about him?
Charlie: (Picks up Bible) He's in here, Marvin. This is much more than "a nice little story," Marvin. You know, Peter and Thomas would never have taken the risks they took for just "a nice little story." Let's read this book together, Marvin from Missouri, and I'll show you.
(Charlie and Marvin exit stage right. Harry looks heavenward)
Harry: Thank you, Lord! (Follows them offstage)
This play comes about as close as I'm going to get to a Cecil B. DeMille, cast-of-thousands production. I pray that you will have some fun with it.
