I Waited Patiently For The LORD
Devotional
Companion to the Psalter
A Devotional Guide to the Psalms
Object:
I waited patiently for the LORD;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
He drew me up from the desolate pit ...
set my feet upon a rock,
making my steps secure.
He put a new song in my mouth ...
I have not hidden your saving help within my heart,
I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation.
-- Psalm 40:1-3a, 10a
Theme: Praise for deliverance and prayer for help
Outline
1-3 -- I waited patiently, and God bent down to me and lifted me out of the mire. Praise him!
4-5 -- Happiness comes from trusting God and learning of his incomparable goodness.
6-8 -- Instead of ritual devotion, Lord, you've enabled me to listen to your Word, and I gladly give myself to obey it.
9-10 -- I have openly proclaimed the glad news of your salvation.
11-12 -- Evils are always around and sin is always part of me, so stand by me faithfully with your love.
13-17 -- Protect us from the wicked, so your people, poor and needy, may rejoice in you.
Notes
• Thanksgiving -- Lament
• Verses 13-17 recur with slight variation as Psalm 70.
• Verses 6-8 are quoted in Hebrews 10:5-7, using the psalmist's words as prophetic of Christ's offering himself on the cross (far better than the inefficacious sacrifices of the law).
• Read Ephesians 2:1-10 to see how Christians share David's experience of the love of God.
For Reflection
• A worthy objective for the preacher of the word to keep before him as he prepares to teach and preach (vv. 9-10). Couldn't this psalm be the life story of a faithful Christian -- pastor, Sunday school teacher, parent, and so on?
• "I waited patiently" (v. 1). We want God to hurry up! The whole Bible story reminds us that we live by God's timetable. The waiting is productive in developing patience, the persistence and steadfastness in the face of adverse circumstances, the forbearance and forgiveness of wrongs done to us without seeking vengeance.
Prayer
Lord God, you came down to us in your Son, Jesus Christ, lifting us sinners out of our hopeless condition, enabling us to serve you with self-giving and with praise. May your Spirit give us patience to run the race that is set before us, generously sharing the gospel, so that all may know your redeeming love. We praise you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
