The Hymn Of The Day
Children's sermon
Let Them Answer
(After the sermon ask the children to join you. Have a piano player or guitarist available to help you, unless you are good at a cappella.)
I like to sing. Do you? (LTA) Let's sing a song about being happy and singing and clapping. Does anyone know a song like that? (LTA) Let's sing a little bit of "If You're Happy And You Know It." Okay? (LTA)
If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands.
If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands.
If you're happy and you know it,
Then your life will really show it.
If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands.
If you're happy and you know it, stomp your feet ...
There are more verses but let's see if we can think of another song. How about a song that tells us God loves the whole world and takes care of it with his own hands. Does anyone know a song like that? (LTA) "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands" is a great song. Let's sing a verse of it.
He's got the whole world in his hands. (4 times)
He's got the little tiny baby in his hands ...
He's got you and me brother/sister in his hands ...
That's a great song, too. How about a song that tells us that Jesus is our friend. Do you know a song like that? (LTA) "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" is a good example. Shall we sing a verse of that? (LTA) [Or use a song you know is familiar]
What a friend we have in Jesus . . .
Did you know that every hymn has a special message like those songs? (LTA) They really do. Listen to a verse of the hymn of the day. Let's see if you can listen for the message. (Sing for the children or have a soloist or group sing a verse of the hymn. Do this on a Sunday when you choose a familiar hymn with an obvious, easy theme you used in your sermon. Examples: Amazing Grace, Beautiful Savior, Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee, The Church's One Foundation, and so forth.)
What was the special message? (LTA - with most hymns it won't take too much help from you to make it surface.) Good! Did you know that we choose all of the hymns for the message they give us, especially the hymn of the day? (LTA) We really do. So when we sing the hymns, see if you can catch the special message that we are singing.
Why do we stand when we're singing hymns? (LTA) Yes, since most hymns are prayers to God, we show respect by standing. We can also sing much better when we stand, can't we? (LTA) Thank you for singing those songs with me. Would you like to help me sing the hymn of the day with the congregation? (LTA - Do it!)
