A Call To Worship
Worship Aids, Lectionary Year B
Call To Worship (based on Isaiah 6:1-8)
One: In the year that King Uzziah died Isaiah saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and his train filled the temple.
All: Above the Lord stood the seraphim; each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.
One: And one called to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory."
All: And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke.
One: And Isaiah said: "Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!"
All: Then flew one of the seraphim to me, having in his hand a burning coal which he had taken with tongs from the altar.
One: And he touched Isaiah's mouth, and said: "Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin forgiven."
All: And Isaiah heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" Then he said, "Here am I! Send me."
Unison Prayer Of Invocation
Lord, we thank you for the honor of calling us to the work of your kingdom. We're grateful for your presence in our midst this morning. However, this is not a great time, O Lord. There are many complications in our lives. There are a lot of distractions that are out of our control. And if we follow you there's no telling where it might lead. We know that with our baptism we said, "Here I am, send me!" But we're hoping to negotiate a better time, a little more convenient for all the things we still have to get done. Thank you again, Lord. Amen.
"A Song Of All Creation"
(11 10 11 10)
The rulers in their halls will not keep silence
Nor will the shining stars withhold their song.
As every rushing river marks the cadence
So will the seas and fountains sing along.
Our song is sung to praise the only Father.
Our song is sung to praise the only Son.
In song we praise the Holy Spirit. Gather
Our praises to all three and praise as one.
Then cry out every Angel every hour
In singing out: "Amen Amen the Lord,
The only giver of all good in power
Be praised in psalms, be praised in every word."
The rulers in their halls will not keep silence.
Nor will the shining stars withhold their song.
As every rushing river marks the cadence
So ever in the ages sing along.
(Papyrus Oxyrhynchus XV [1922] 1786, late third century, verse translation by Frank Ramirez)
Morning Prayer (based on Romans 8:12-17, 26)
God, you have called us to be your children. We received your Spirit, and we know this was not a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear. When we cry, "Abba! Father!" it is the Spirit bearing witness through us that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with Christ in order that we may also be glorified with him. This is a great matter for us, one beyond our own words, but we know likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. You know our longing. You know our weakness. Call us again, Lord. We answer with conviction, and we pray, with your courage. Amen.
Offering Prayer
All we own we owe to you, God of gifts and God of glory. We offer back to you merely a portion of that which is already yours. Challenge us to greater stewardship, that we might offer you our lives as well. Amen.
