A CALL TO REMEMBER OUR FREEDOM
L: Gracious God, look upon us now as we celebrate the freedom we have in this nation. History causes us to remember the cost of that freedom. Spirit of Truth, be with us, joining our hearts in thanksgiving as we celebrate our Independence Day.
C: Come Spirit of Freedom, Amen.
L: Today we celebrate the freedom secured for us as a nation. The battles waged to win independence and keep freedom cost the lives of many. In that liberty, we now work and worship and live under a government that proclaims "One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
We remember that freedom does not come without a cost. In freedom, we proclaim the death of one who died to truly set us free. The battle over sin and death was won at the cost of the life of God's own Son. We were set free at that moment to live under God's kingship, with the government of our lives upon Christ's shoulders. But God does not want us to live out that freedom independent from him. So we pause to celebrate his lordship in our lives and our dependency on his mercy.
TRUE FREEDOM IN CHRIST
L: God established our freedom at creation, giving us a choice to eat of his blessings and be sheltered from the knowledge of evil;
C: We rejoice and celebrate our freedom to choose.
L: Disobeying God, we came to eat of the forbidden fruit and strife entered our lives;
C: The battle still rages within us, O God.
L: God sent Christ, to show us the truth and that truth has set us free;
C: The strife is o'er, the battle won. Jesus, the Truth, has set us free!
L: We join those who rejoiced in the Spirit of '76 declaring a free and just nation;
C: Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is true freedom.
L: As citizens of this great nation, we pledge our allegiance to defend and uphold that freedom, a blessing from God;
C: And as subjects of The Most High God, we owe to God our freedom in Christ.
IN PRAISE OF FREEDOM
L: Christ has freed us from our sins,
C: Praise God for our salvation.
L: He came to set the captives free,
C: Praise God for our salvation.
L: We are justified freely by God's grace,
C: Praise God for our salvation.
L: For freedom Christ has set us free,
C: Praise God for our salvation.
L: If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed,
C: Praise God for our salvation.
L: Freely, freely you have received,
C: Freely we give God praise for our salvation.
L: Let us pray: Almighty Founder of our Faith, pour out upon our nation and each of us as Americans a true spirit of appreciation for the freedoms we enjoy. We bless you, O God, as we gather in celebration of this Independence Day, and ask your Spirit to move mightily throughout our land. We understand the cost of freedom as we see our freedom purchased in Christ's blood. As the Liberty Bell announced the birth of a nation, so let the angels proclaim our birth as children of God. In Christ who sets us free we pray.
C: Our hearts celebrate that freedom. Amen.
