Lectionary Worship Workbook
Series III, Cycle A
Object:
Gathering
The Revelation text may be used as a Gathering/Call to Worship. Have the Pastor/Leader speak verses 9, 10a, 11, 13a, and 14a and b. The congregation would speak 10b. The choir may sing 12b. (The opening phrase of "Blessing And Honor" would work well.) A second reader, who is among the elders of your congregation, would speak 14c-17. The hymn "Blessing And Honor" may be played softly during the reading with the congregation joining in singing the hymn at the conclusion of the reading. This could be done in the narthex or outside, depending on weather. The congregation would process in during the hymn.
Prayer Of The Day
P: From the throne of grace, you see all, O God. From the throne of grace, you love all. We pray for the day when sorrow and suffering will be no more, when every tear will be wiped from our eyes, and when we see your love clearly in the faces of all those whom death cannot hold. We pray in the name of the Lamb, who is our eternal shepherd, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C: Amen, amen.
Hymn Of The Day/Remembrance Of The Faithful Departed
"Who Is This Host Arrayed In White"
The congregation sings verses 1 and 3. Verse 2 is sung softly by the choir while the names of the beloved of the congregation who have entered into the church triumphant in the last year are read.
Intercessory Prayer
Use the hymn, "Blest Are They," as the basis for Intercessory Prayer on this morning. Have as many petitions as there are verses. Speak the petitions over an instrumental interlude between verses, concluding the prayers with, "Rejoice and be glad."
Offertory Prayer/Prayer Of Confession
C: Hungering and thirsting for your righteousness, we come to your table, gracious Lord. Cleanse us, that we may be pure in heart. Strengthen us, that fear of persecution would not stop us from embodying your love. Grant us peace, that your great blessings for your children would be revealed, for you live and reign eternally, our Savior and King. Amen.
Eucharistic Prayer
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Lift up your hearts.
C: We lift them up to the Lord.
P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C: It is right to give him thanks and praise.
P: O God of all the ages,
all that is, is yours.
Past and present, and future,
your word brings life beyond mortal comprehension.
Healing the sick, embracing the poor, breathing life into the dead:
redefining freedom, you sent your Son who called to us from a cross,
that the worst of our fears would be destroyed.
In the night in which he was betrayed
our Lord Jesus took bread and gave thanks,
broke it and gave it to his disciples saying,
"Take and eat, this is my body given for you.
Do this in remembrance of me."
Again after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it to all to drink saying,
"Take and drink, this cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this in remembrance of me."
Send your Spirit upon us now,
that with this bread and cup we stand before you.
Remake us in the strength of your love,
so that with all the faithful who now reign with you,
we would raise our voices in praise:
C: Taste And See The Goodness Of The Lord (TFF 5)
Liturgical Dance
Use eight dancers, each one striking a pose reflective of a phrase in the Beatitudes as the gospel text is read. Have them encircle the reader. Then have them return during the intercessions, each one in the same pose as before, but this time placed throughout the congregation, embodying what it means for the congregation to pray the scriptures.
Sending
P: Bless the Lord in all ways.
Make God's name great among all peoples,
that each one of his children may live with the eternal hope
of the day that is coming,
when every tear will be wiped away,
and every sorrow vanquished forever.
C: Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom
and thanksgiving and honor and power and might
be to our God forever and ever! Amen.
P: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, + and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
