The tabloid headlines at the checkout stands are intriguing.
Some stories are too grotesque to believe. Some are true, but are
badly wrenched out of context, leaving a false impression. But if
you stop to think about it, were you to remove typical headline
grabbers like "shocking," "startling," "secret," or "scandalous,"
many of the items being addressed are rather normal life
activities. People deceive one another, break each other's
hearts, or struggle unsuccessfully with temptations that afflict
us all. We usually like to laugh at, ridicule, or delight in, the
pains of celebrities -- which of course, is what sells those
tabloids. Since we have to stand in line anyway, why not use the
time constructively, not to ridicule, but to pray for those souls
who are in trouble, that they might experience God's healing and
blessing?
