Telling The Story
Have you ever had a really bad day? You wake up late. There's no hot water left for your shower, and your favorite cereal is all gone, so you have to eat something you don't like for breakfast. Halfway to school, you realize that when you were brushing your teeth, you missed a spot, and now you have to spend the rest of the day with morning breath. After you get to school, you discover that you forgot to do your homework, but that doesn't matter because the juice box that you packed in your lunch leaked and now everything in your backpack is soaked. One of your teachers gives a pop quiz, and during gym, you're the last one chosen for a kickball team. Your best friend won't speak to you. On the way home, you drop your art project. When you get home, you spill your milk while eating your after-school snack, and worst of all, even your dog won't play with you.
What a rotten day. We all have days like that, and when we do, it's easy to start thinking that maybe something is wrong with us. Maybe we're stupid. Maybe we think something even worse. On days like that, we need to remember Jeremiah 1:5a. (Hold up the card stock printed with the scripture reference and verse.) The reason this card says verse 5a is because I'm just reading the first part of the verse. "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you."
God is talking to Jeremiah in this verse, but he's talking to us, too. God made Jeremiah. God made each one of us, too. Look at the underlined words: "I formed you." We aren't accidents. We aren't by-products. God formed each and every one of us. He planned us and made us himself ... on purpose.
Look at the words at the end of this sentence: "I knew you." Each one of us is so special to God that he took the time to get to know us even before we were made! Each one of you is so special that God even keeps track of how many hairs are growing out of your head. When you comb your hair in the morning and a few hairs fall out and stick in the comb, God even keeps track of that. He does this because he loves you very much.
Even on the worst day of your life, even when you feel like no one cares, it's important to remember that God loves you very much and you are very special to him. That's why he sent his Son to die for each one of us. No matter how bad a day may seem, it's a good day because God loves you very much.
Prayer
Dear Lord,
Thank you so much for loving us. Thank you for hand-making each one of us and loving us so much that you count our hairs. Please help us, even on the worst of our bad days, to remember how much you care and help us to be able to share that love with the people around us.
In Jesus' name. Amen.
