It was January 1991. All the news reports indicated we would
soon be at war with Iraq. In fact, President Bush had given
Sadaam Hussein until January 15 to withdraw from Kuwait or face
war with the United States and a host of other nations.
I was attending a banquet where I had been asked to sit at the head table and give the invocation. The special speaker for the evening was Admiral William Crowell, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest-ranking person in our military for several years in the Reagan and Bush administrations.
