Series VII, Cycle A
Call To Worship
We call it The Fall, as if the sin of our first parents was the only, and the greatest sin, but the first eleven chapters of Genesis reveal a series of falls. There is an ever widening gap as a brother kills a brother, and some breach the wall of protection from the eternal. While a flood follows the disintegration of society, and the proper gap between parent and child is ignored. Finally, the people use their God-given talents and knowledge to build themselves up, instead of to serve their Creator. So many sins - and one cross slapped down to bridge the abyss.
Collect
This First Sunday In Lent we come to consider a sin we might claim as our own, the willful disobedience of God's good will for our lives. Even here there is hope. It is in that hope that we gather to praise the name of the Lord. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
May we learn from the sin of our parents not to blame each other, but to take responsibility for our sins, to confess before God, and to believe in the possibility of reconciliation. Amen.
Hymns
"Love Lifted Me"
"Wonderful Grace Of Jesus"
"How Great Thou Art"
First Sunday In Lent
Second Lesson: Romans 5:12-19
Theme: One For All
Call To Worship (Psalm 32:1-5)
One: Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
All: Happy are those to whom the Lord imputes no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.
One: While I kept silence, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long.
All: For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah.
One and All: Then I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not hide my iniquity; I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the Lord," and you forgave the guilt of my sin.
Collect
In Adam's Fall
We Sinned All.
Christ Claimed the Lost
And Paid the cost.
Prayer Of Confession
There is nothing like your forgiveness, your acceptance, your salvation. There is nothing, Lord, to match the boundless grace you offer. In this season of Lent we admit our shortcomings, our failings, our poor choices, our deliberate malice, and praise you for your forgiveness, your renewal, your redemption. Amen.
Hymns
"Jesus, Keep Me Near The Cross"
"Spirit Of God Descend Upon My Heart"
"I Will Sing Of My Redeemer"
First Sunday In Lent
Gospel Lesson: Matthew 4:1-11
Theme: Not Interested
Call To Worship
Let us come together in worship, confident in the knowledge that there is no place we can go, no trial we can face, no temptation we might endure, where we will not find Jesus has been before.
Collect
Let us gather in worship today, prepared to hear anew the story of the temptation of Jesus, and to celebrate the daring idea from God to enter into history not in power, but in the majesty of vulnerability. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
In the face of our temptations let us draw strength from each other, and let us take as our example our own Lord Jesus Christ. Stand by us, Lord Jesus, in our hour of trial. You are our hope in this weary world. Amen.
Hymns
"I Am Leaning On The Lord" ("Who Died On Calvary")
"I Heard The Voice Of Jesus Say"
"The Old Rugged Cross"
