I remember in the 1950s, seeing Jackie Gleason run off stage
near the end of his variety show, slip and fall, and break his
leg. They cut away to a commercial, but the show had to be
concluded without him. That's how it was in the early days of
live television. Today, nearly everything is taped, and all
bloopers and errors are edited out so that we see only a perfect
program, perfectly produced. The trouble is, we begin to expect
real life, and the daily actions of others, to be perfectly
