Call To Worship
Leader: I waited patiently for the Lord.
People: He inclined to me and heard my cry.
Leader: He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.
People: Happy are those who make the Lord their trust.
Collect
O Lord, our God, we come to worship you and give thanks for the promised coming of your Son to proclaim the Good News of salvation to all who will receive him. Give us receptive hearts, we pray, that we may be called oaks of righteousness and be used by you to build up the devastation of many generations. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we know that you love justice and hate wrongdoing, but we must confess that we have not always faithfully followed in the footsteps of our Master. Forgive our waywardness, and through your Holy Spirit may we be builders of your kingdom here on earth. Amen.
Hymns
"Send Your Word"
"Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates"
Third Sunday Of Advent
Second Lesson: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24
Theme: Prayer And Thanksgiving As We Wait The Lord's Coming
Call To Worship
Let us come before the Lord rejoicing as we anticipate the birth of Christ.
Let us come before our God with thanksgiving for he has blessed us beyond measure.
With praise and thanksgiving let us worship the Lord our God.
Collect
Praise be to you, O God, for you have delivered us in our time of need. You are awesome in your deeds among mortals. When we stumble and fall back into bad habits, your steadfast love, O Lord, holds us up. We come into your presence this morning with thanksgiving, Father, and we lift up our voices to you with songs of praise. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Loving Heavenly Father, our good intentions are to hold fast to what is good, and to abstain from every form of evil. But we are weak, Lord, and you know where the road leads that is paved with good intentions. Forgive us, Lord, and enable us to walk the path that is straight and narrow, but leads to your kingdom. Amen.
Hymns
"Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming"
"Love Divine, All Loves Excelling"
Third Sunday Of Advent
Gospel Lesson: John 1:6-8, 19-28
Theme: Called To Testify
Call To Worship
Leader: Sing to the Lord, bless his name.
People: We will tell of his salvation from day to day.
Leader: Declare his glory among the nations.
People: We will speak of his marvelous works among all the peoples.
All: We come to worship the Lord, our Maker, for he is our God!
Collect
We give thanks, O God, for the light that came to the world through your Son, Jesus Christ. As we prepare to celebrate the coming of that Light of the world, make us ready, we pray, to testify and bear witness to that Light which no darkness can put out. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
O God, how can we bear witness to Jesus, the Light of the world, when we so often choose to live in darkness. Forgive our foolishness when we know the Light is there, but choose instead to grope in the darkness. Lead us once again with the Light, Heavenly Father, and then use us to testify to the saving power of that Light which came into the world when Jesus walked among us. Amen.
Hymns
"Go Tell It On The Mountain"
"Good Christian Friends, Rejoice"
