Goldie Belongs To Me

Matthew To Revelation
Object: a pet dog, cat, or even a goldfish
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought along a friend with me today to help me tell you a story. I love this friend very much because it is one of the things that belongs to me in this world. (show the children your pet) This is "Goldie," my goldfish. She is beautiful, and one of the very best swimmers in the whole world. She would have to be good the way that she can swim around corners and through the little openings in the sea castles that I have put in her bowl.
Do any of you have a pet fish? (let them answer) Fish are wonderful pets. Sometimes I sit and watch Goldie and I am amazed at the things that she can do. Have you ever watched your fish? (let them answer) Do you see the way that Goldie swims with her eyes open? Can you swim under water with your eyes open? And sometimes she swims standing still. She is an excellent swimmer and she belongs to me. I guess that is the best part of it. Goldie loves belonging to me because I change her water when it is supposed to be changed, I feed her, and I love her as a pet. That is what is called belonging, and Goldie belongs to me.
Now here is why I brought Goldie along to share with you this morning. Goldie is my pet fish and she belongs to me, but I must belong to someone also. I guess I belong to my mother and father and to all of my family. I belong to my friends and neighbors. But I want to belong to someone even more special, and the Bible tells me that I do. The Bible tells me that I belong to Jesus. I want to belong to Jesus, but even more important is the fact that Jesus wants me to belong to him. He tells people how much I belong to him and I am glad. If I love Goldie so much because she belongs to me, then think how Jesus must feel when he says that I belong to him. That is a good feeling.
The same thing is true of you. The Bible teaches us that you belong to Jesus and that he is happy about it. You belong to Jesus and it is very important to him that you do. The next time you see your pet or you think about Goldie, remember how much we love our pets, and then you will think about how much Jesus loves you and how you belong to him.
