God is with his people

LECTIONARY WORSHIP AIDS
Call to Worship
Pastor:
God intervenes in history to prove he is with his people, acting on their behalf.
People:
God has done that quite often; but the greatest sign of his presence is the birth of Christ.
Pastor:
Jesus was called Emmanuel, because he was living evidence that God had come to save his people.
People: He is our Emmanuel, too! For God is with us in his Son who came to be our Savior!
Collect
O loving God, who makes your presence felt in each generation, blessing your people with grace and guidance: May the gift of your Son, acknowledged through our celebration of his birth, be the sign of your presence in our generation; that we may know you are in our midst to save us. In his name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
The songs of Christmas are so familiar to us, Father; but in the rush of busy schedules, we become numb to their message that you have come to live in our midst. Forgive us when we are insensitive to your presence, and unresponsive to your life. Awaken us to your presence in the birth of your Son; that we may live our lives in the assurance that you are always with us. We pray through Christ our Savior. Amen.
Hymns
"Angels, from the Realms of Glory"
"Let All Together Praise Our God"
"Love Came Down at Christmas"
"O Little Town of Bethlehem"
FOURTH SUNDAY IN ADVENT
Second Lesson: Romans 1:1-7
Theme:
Jesus: Son of God, son of man
Call to Worship
Pastor:
What a wonderful Savior is Jesus our Lord!
People:
He is Son of God, and son of man.
Pastor:
In the flesh he suffered all the trials of man; yet as Son of God, he brought salvation for all mankind.
People:
Jesus is Lord! We give him our lives in thanksgiving for his gift of new life.
Collect
Almighty God, whose good news is the gift of your Son who was born of woman: Convict us of our need to accept him as our Savior, that we may share in the blessings of the life you give through him. In his name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We are very conscious of the gift of your Son, Father. We rejoice with others in the celebration of his birth. But our celebration is more a party, than putting into practice the new way of life which he taught. Forgive us for hearing the good news, but not living the good life that is proclaimed in the news. Help us to see in your Son, one who lived in the flesh, that we may follow his example of living the righteous life. We pray in the name of Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Hymns
"Hail to the Lord's Anointed"
"Hark! the Herald Angels Sing"
"Let All Together Praise Our God"
"Love Came Down at Christmas"
FOURTH SUNDAY IN ADVENT
Gospel:
Matthew 1:18-25
Theme:
Jesus' divine origin
Call to Worship
Pastor:
Long ago God promised a Messiah whose mission would be to make God's presence a reality.
People:
God revealed to Joseph in a dream that Mary's son was to be that Messiah.
Pastor:
Jesus' birth is divine, because God intervened in history to send his Son.
People:
God continues to give himself through his Son; that all who recognize his divine origin may find him to be their Emmanuel.
Collect
Almighty God, whose order in creation makes every birth a miracle; but who ordered Jesus' birth to be uniquely divine: Become real in our lives as we put our faith in Jesus your Son; that we may know you have come to be with us in everyday life. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We come with joy in our hearts, Father, because we know Jesus came to save us from our sins. We invite you to be our Emmanuel, and ask that you forgive us our sins through Jesus, your Son. May the joy we feel at his birth increase as we grow in our commitment to him who has brought your love to us. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Hymns
"O Little Town of Bethlehem"
"Silent Night, Holy Night"
"There's a Song in the Air"
"What Child Is This"
