Many times we settle for lives and experiences that are limited and incomplete. The late Albert Outler said that the American frontier circuit riders, disdaining the whole range of tradition and learning, "already knew what they didn't need to know." We can hardly blame those courageous young men who took the faith to our nation's westward expansion. They understood that deep theological thinking and religious reasoning were not prime requirements on the rough and primitive frontier.
