I've Heard That All My Life!
Familiar Expressions from the Bible
Object:
Expression: Freely you have received, so freely give
Location: Matthew 10:8
Verse: Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.
Jesus sent the twelve apostles out endued with miraculous powers to teach and preach to the people. Their commission was to confirm the gospel of the kingdom with these powers.
I remember a person I met during the early 1990s. The place was a mission house in a large metropolitan city which was dedicated to helping homeless street people.
A man who was serving as a volunteer at the mission freely gave of his time to cook, clean, open the mail, and do just about anything that came along that needed to be done.
It was later learned that this volunteer at one time had lost his job, and his wife and son had been killed in a car wreck. He had no other family. For a time he depended on this mission house for his meals and his life. He expressed that he was thankful that he had freely received, so now he would freely give.
Great happiness and peace of mind can come to a person who lives by the Words of our Lord.
