MOTHER: (AS THOMAS ENTERS) Thomas, come here!
THOMAS: Yes, Mother.
MOTHER: You disobeyed me.
THOMAS: Yes, Mother, I did.
MOTHER: Why? Why did you leave this house when I told you not to?
THOMAS: I had to, Mother. I just had to see Jesus.
MOTHER: And you left your father unattended, to do what? Follow some preacher! I told you. Don't get your hopes up about Jesus.
THOMAS: Oh, Mother, my hopes are up.
MOTHER: Well, if they are you're going to be disappointed.
THOMAS: Not me, Mother. And you won't be either.
MOTHER: I've been disappointed so many times. It's a way of life with me.
THOMAS: Let me tell you about Jesus, Mother.
MOTHER: I don't want to hear about Jesus. Let me tell you about your poor father lying upstairs, probably wanting a drink of water and you not there to give it to him. Oh, you are a bad boy.
THOMAS: I went to Joash's house and Jesus was surrounded by all these people. All wanting to be healed.
MOTHER: I'm not listening to this.
THOMAS: And I couldn't even get in to see Jesus.
MOTHER: Well, there now. That serves you right. Jesus, if he was any good, would have told you your place was at home with your mother and your helpless father.
THOMAS: But I took Father with me.
MOTHER: What? You what? How could you take your father anywhere? Your father's paralyzed!
THOMAS: I got a couple of friends and we came home and took Father over to Joash's house. As I said, there were too many people, so we took Father up to their roof and tore a hole in the roof and let Father down into the house.
MOTHER: A hole in the roof. Oh, it gets worse.
THOMAS: Oh, no, Mother. It gets better.
MOTHER: How will we ever fix our neighbor's roof?
HARETH: (ENTERS) I'll build him a new roof. My son here and I.
MOTHER: Hareth! You're walking. You're up and walking. Here, sit down. How? How?
THOMAS: Jesus healed him. I've been trying to tell you, Mother.
MOTHER: Jesus did this?
HARETH: Yes, he did. And I don't need to sit. I'm as strong as I ever was.
MOTHER: But how?
THOMAS: Jesus told Father that his sins were forgiven.
HARETH: Let me tell it, Thomas. It's my healing.
THOMAS: All right, Father.
HARETH: Well, as I was lying in front of Jesus and he said that my sins were forgiven, I believed that he was God. I believed.
MOTHER: I guess anyone would believe that.
HARETH: Not anyone. Not the scribes.
THOMAS: They didn't say a word. But Jesus knew their hearts.
MOTHER: Who doesn't know their hearts?
HARETH: And Jesus said to them: Why are you turning these things over in your hearts? Which is easier to say to this paralyzed man -- your sins are forgiven or rise up, take up your bed and walk?
THOMAS: And the scribes didn't say a word, did they, Father?
HARETH: No, they didn't. But Jesus did. Jesus said to the scribes that to prove that he had the authority to forgive sins he would heal me. He told me to rise and take my bed and go home. So here I am!
MOTHER: Here you are! Indeed you are!
THOMAS: See, I told you, Mother. Hope!
MOTHER: We do have hope. We really do. Jesus is really the Messiah. The Son of God and our Lord.
HARETH: Let's go, son. We have a roof to repair.
