Theme: The Promise Of A Kingdom Of Justice And Righteousness
Call To Worship
Leader: Give thanks to the Lord of hosts,
People: for the Lord is good.
All: His steadfast love endures forever.
Collect
Heavenly Father, today we begin our journey to the lowly stable where the Christ Child was born. Be with us in our journey, we pray, and help us to find the true meaning of this world-shaking event. May we learn to put our faith in a kingdom based on justice and righteousness, and commit ourselves anew to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we prepare for your advent, but we confess that we often forget you have already come. We pray that in this holy season we may truly experience your presence with us through your Holy Spirit giving us guidance, strength, new vision, and hope for the coming of your kingdom. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Lord, we are committed to your kingdom established on the cornerstone of love, and where righteousness and justice will prevail. Use these, our gifts, we pray, for the work of that kingdom. In Jesus' name. Amen.
Hymns
"I Want To Be Ready"
"Send Your Word"
"Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus"
First Sunday Of Advent
Second Lesson: 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13
Theme: Love One Another
Call To Worship
Leader: Make me to know your way, O Lord;
People: teach me your paths.
Leader: Lead me in your truth, and teach me,
People: for you are the God of my salvation.
Collect
O God, everyone loves a baby, but, as we make the Advent journey, help us to look beyond the manger to the cross and the empty tomb. In this holy season may we learn the lessons of love and forgiveness for which our Savior lived and died and rose again. In his name we pray. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, you have taught us to love one another, but we must confess that we find this to be a most difficult commandment. Forgive our shortcomings, we pray, and strengthen our hearts in holiness that we may increase and abound in love for one another. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
O God, you have shown us your love through the gift of your Son. Now in some small way we would show our love for you through these gifts. We pray they will be used to make your love known throughout the world. Amen.
Hymns
"My Soul Gives Glory To My God"
"O Day Of God, Draw Nigh"
"Arise! Shine!"
First Sunday Of Advent
Gospel Lesson: Luke 21:25-36
Theme: Preparation For His Coming
Call To Worship
Leader: No one in Bethlehem was prepared for the coming of the Lord.
People: During this Advent Season we have the opportunity to prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus.
Leader: When Jesus was born in Bethlehem no one recognized him as the Messiah.
People: We gather here to worship Jesus as our Lord and Savior.
All: Praise be to God!
Collect
Heavenly Father, the people of Bethlehem still haven't learned the lessons that were taught by the Prince of Peace, born in their city so long ago. Help us to use this Advent season to prepare ourselves to receive that message anew so that we may be used by you to bring your love to all people everywhere. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, this is the time of year when we are tempted to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, and in so doing, lose sight of what it all means. Be with us, we pray, in our Advent journey, and keep us ever mindful of the real reason for the season. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
O God, we bring these gifts as tokens of our love for you, and in thanksgiving for your gift to us of your only Son, Jesus. Use these gifts and us, we pray, to further your kingdom here on earth. Amen.
