Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Isaiah 2:1-5
Theme: With Joy
Call To Worship
Leader: With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.
People: God is our strength and our might.
Leader: Surely God is our salvation.
All: We will trust and be unafraid.
Collect
You do make a difference in our lives, O God. Our enthusiasm for meeting each day grows stronger as we anticipate your saving action on this earth. In the name of the living God. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We all need your comfort, O Gracious and Forgiving God. We need peace from inner and outer assault. We yearn, O God, for wholeness. Free us from pain of burden and distress. Be strength for us. Be the strongest force in our lives so that we will trust and not be afraid. Amen.
01A Hymns1
"Creator Of The Stars Of Night" Tune: CONDITOR
"We Yearn, O [Christ][God], For Wholeness" Tune: PASSION CHORALE
"Comfort, Comfort [O][These][Ye] My People" Tune: PSALM 42
First Sunday In Advent
Second Lesson: Romans 13:11-14
Theme: Choose Light
Call To Worship
Leader: Advent has come.
People: Advent is here.
Leader: Lay aside darkness.
People: We call out for hope.
Leader: Lay aside hiding among shadows.
People: We look for the light.
All: Light will come.
Collect
Nudging God, let us dare to surrender to the coming light of Jesus' birth. Let us give in to your nudge to hope. Let us gather as people who choose to follow your light. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Listening God, you hear us even when we shrink within private darkness. We choose the dark, letting its works crowd out the strength of light. We cloak ourselves with the shadows of the dark. We confess that the darkness is comfortable. We let it obscure what is true about us, then wonder why others do not really know us. Forgive us for choosing the easy way. Forgive our forgetting that you are with us in the dark. Amen.
01A Hymns1
"[O][Oh] Come, O Come, Emmanuel" Tune: VENI EMMANUEL
"Almighty God, Give Us The Grace" Tune: TALLIS' CANON
"Watchman [Watcher], Tell Us Of The Night" Tune: ABERYSTWYTH
First Sunday In Advent
Gospel: Matthew 24:36-44
Theme: Keep Awake
Call To Worship
Leader: Keep awake. Keep from spiritual snoozing through winter's gloom. Push away the desert of lethargy.
People: Now is the time to be attentive to matters of the heart. Advent has begun.
Leader: Keep awake. Don't let boredom be your attitude of choice. Rouse your interest in important matters.
People: Now is the time to sort the vital from the trivial. Advent has begun.
Leader: Keep awake. Be ready for the action of God. Pay attention to what is coming.
People: Now is time to make ready for hope. Advent has begun.
Collect
Quiet the noise within us, O God, the anxious prattle that muffles hope, so we might be alert for moments to glimpse the holy within and live beyond the earthly-minded. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
When first thoughts about Advent and Christmas months slipped in months ago, somehow, God, the swell of hope was more spontaneous than now when we are already caught in the rush. Sustain us these days that we might stay alert to the right matters, those of the heart. For the sake of Jesus. Amen.
