Series III, Cycle A
CALL TO WORSHIP
Open your heart to the Spirit of hope, like someone in the darkness looking for the first light of dawn.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God ot our yesterdays, our todays, and our tomorrows, we are too prone to live for the moment, to let our health and our emotions and our passions rule our lives. You offer us the Spirit to bring these things into wholeness under your control, hut we resist and often are overtaken by events, and sink into despair. From the depths you would raise us if we cry out to you, but at times it seems we prefer sullen silence. Forgive self-pity that closes you out. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
DECLARATION OF GOD'S FORGIVENESS
Hear the Good News! In the Lord is love unfailing, and great is his power to set us free. God alone sets us free from all our sins. Friends, believe the Good News! In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
EXHORTATION
Live on the level of the Spirit. Keep the spiritual outlook that is life and peace.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Loose us, living Lord, from the fear of death and its power, to live freely the life of the Spirit, in obedience to your command, so that, invigorated by the indwelling Spirit, we may accomplish your purposes, to the glory of your name. Amen.
PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
Living God untouched by death, incarnate Son of God, Conqueror of death; life-giving Spirit of God; we tax our minds and our language to praise you, even to name you. No thanksgiving we offer is adequate. Human life is a mystery: your life even more so. Your love for us mortals, like the love of Jesus for Lazarus defies description. We find unending joy in the assurance of your love and the promise of eternal life with you and with all whom we love. Amen.
PRAYER OF DEDICATION
These offerings, good Lord, are life-giving only as your Spirit enables us as the church to do your work in the world. Bless and use us in your service of others. Amen.
PSALM 130
Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD. Lord, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications!
If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand?
But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered.
I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope;
my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning,
more than those who watch for the morning.
O Israel, hope in the LORD!
For with the LORD there is steadfast love,
and with him is great power to redeem.
It is he who will redeem Israel from all its iniquities.
Open your heart to the Spirit of hope, like someone in the darkness looking for the first light of dawn.
