Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Isaiah 58:1-9a (9b-12)
Theme: Draw Near
Call To Worship
Leader: Draw near to God, you who seek God and want to know God's ways.
People: How do we draw near to God?
Leader: Not by doing hurtful things to your body to gain God's or anyone else's attention.
People: How, then, do we draw near?
Leader: Not by humbling yourself at another's expense.
People: Is it possible to come closer to God?
Leader: Yes, God will hear your voice as you do things that increase the well-being of others.
Collect
We come, O God, to serve your interests and not our own. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Gracious God, strengthen us to look outward rather than inward so we might see and respond to the distress of a needy world. Help us to loosen the knots of injustice and oppression. Help us to share what we have with the impoverished. Remind us to stay in touch with the needs of relatives. Then, O God, you will hear our voices and see that we also have what we need. Amen.
13A Hymns
"Lead On, [Eternal Sovereign][O King Eternal]" Tune: LANCASHIRE
"O God Of Love, O God Of Peace" Tune: HESPERUS
"Let There Be Light, Lord God Of Hosts" Tune: ELTON or PENTECOST
Fifth Sunday After Epiphany
Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 2:1-12 (13-16)
Theme: Truly Human, Truly God's
Call To Worship
Epiphany surprise also contains the wonder of mystery. "For what human being knows what is truly human except the human spirit that is within? So also no one comprehends what is truly God's except the Spirit of God." Come to worship always ready to be surprised and awed by the gifts of the Spirit that God offers us.
Collect
Slowly, as your Spirit searches and knows us through and through, O God, we come to sense not only your depth but the depth of the human spirit. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We come, O Spirit of the Living God, ready for your Spirit to make a difference in our lives. Whisper to us from tomorrow as well as from yesterday. Fill us with the truth of your Spirit. Shape us and use us as your own, O Spirit of the Living God. Amen.
13A Hymns
"Spirit, Spirit Of Gentleness" Tune: SPIRIT
"Send Down Thy Truth, O God" Tune: ST. MICHAEL
"Spirit Of The Living God, Fall Afresh On Me" Tune: IVERSON
Fifth Sunday After Epiphany
Gospel: Matthew 5:13-20
Theme: Lifting The Lamp Shade
Call To Worship
Leader: Let your light shine in such a way that others may see your good works and give the glory to God. Come, let us worship together.
People: Come, let us worship.
Collect
God, who is light and who brings light to the world, you clarify our path. We rejoice in the truth of your light. We rejoice in the persistence of your light. We rejoice in the hope your light brings through Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
God of light, we would bring your illumination to all in the house. When we hesitate, nudge us toward peeking out from beneath our lamp shades. Encourage us to keep our eyes open when the light seems too bright. Remind us that you remain with us, clarifying and illustrating through the example of Jesus the Christ. Amen.

"[Sing Praise To God, Who Has Shaped][Praise To The Lord]" Tune: LOBE DEN HERREN
"This Little Light Of Mine" Tune: LATTIMER
"Arise, Your Light Is Come" or "Rise Up, O [Church][Men] Of God" Tune: FESTAL SONG
