Lectionary Worship Workbook
Planning Ideas And Resources For The Entire Church Year
Again, use an order of worship different from your usual order.
Suggestion:
You may want to order a Good Friday worship, titled, "Faces Around the Cross," from Church World Press, Inc. 2969 West 25th Street Cleveland, Ohio 44113
or,
you may want to develop the worship around a theme, "The Way of His Passion," suggested by Gerald C. Studer, pastor, of the Plains Mennonite Church, Lansdale, Pennsylvania 19446, a service which was used in a three-hour Community Good Friday Service held at the Christ United Methodist Church, Scottsdale, Pennsylvania in 1970.
Here is the outline:
Samaria: Place of Priority Luke 9:51-62
Perea:
Place of Prediction Mark 10:32-34
Bethany: Place of Preparation John 12: 1-8
Gethsemane: Place of Prayer Luke 22:39-46
Gabbatha: Place of Public Trial
John 19:12-16
Golgotha: Place of Passion Mark 15:22-39
Studer suggests that this outline has the merit of reducing the traditional number of meditations from seven to six, thus allowing more time to each sub-service and making it possible for the change-over of speakers to take place on the hour and half-hour rather than at odd-minutes between.
Consider this:
Hand out nails to the worshipers as they enter the sanctuary; skip the bulletins.
Give them plenty of time to reflect on the nails.
For the entire worship, you may want to have "Jesus" simulated on the cross. Perhaps some time during the worship, have him introduce each word from the cross.
