The Epiphany Of Our Lord
Worship
Lectionary Worship Workbook, Series IV, Cycle C
Soul Motion
Object:
The light of truth is in the skies. Or it may be only a shadow.
The ways of God are strange and cause conflicts of faith and impulses of love, opportunities or temptations. Is not love the light of the soul?
-- Henry van Dyke, The Other Wise Man (paraphrased)
Call To Worship
Leader: I'm so glad we're here together! Today's the day we want to be wise and know just where to locate God.
People: This is Epiphany, the day when we are magi and bring our best gifts to God.
Leader: God quite clearly is here --
People: in each of us!
Leader: We have hopes that when the stars shine just right, we will find the baby who grows up to be our teacher and guide.
People: We will search like the ancient men and women until we find some tangible evidence of God being at home with us!
Leader: We know the story: Around 4 CE, astrologers and astronomers read into the movement of the stars the hopes of God being ruler and savior on this earth.
People: They followed the star until it stood over a certain place in Bethlehem. There they found a baby, named Jesus, with Mary, his mother. They gave their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Those scholars understood the baby to be their future king.
Leader: Let us be joyful wise people in this age, searching, singing, and sharing the goodness of God!
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
God of yesterday and today -- thank you for all of nature that makes your creativity visible to us. Thank you for stories that help us understand our search for you and your seeming absence. We are grateful that every now and then, we have an epiphany -- a clear experience of your presence and your activity with us. Let us be wise as we journey from now until eternity. The gift we give this hour is our undivided attention. We anticipate being enthused by your Spirit with words, silence, and music. Amen.
Call To Confession (Leader)
Do you feel confused? Empty? Burdened? Ecstatic? Now is time to consider gifts not given. Or maybe unkind words and actions directed toward someone. Or maybe soul wounds that are not healing. After our spoken prayer, make your own in silence to God. Join me.
Community Confession (Unison)
Spirit for us who seek -- guide us to find you, to be surprised by the clarity with which you show up to heal us and to cleanse us from shame and guilt.
Lift our eyes from the problems of our lives to see ways you make us whole. Amen.
Word Of Grace (Leader)
The God who came in Jesus comes to us. The One who was recognized by wise men looking at stars long ago is available to all our senses. Be alert for the Creator in your environment! And be at peace in your mind and your emotions.
Sermon Idea
A title/theme might be Clearly Hidden -- God in our World. It is no secret that God has created humankind. It is no secret that humans can relate to the transcendent. But it is not clear how God works or why God sometimes uses the divine strong right hand (protective) and at other times uses the strong left hand (violent). The hope for a unified and peaceful Jerusalem is clear. The reality of tribal conflicts centuries old is also clear. We humans need to hope, need to trust that tomorrow will be better than today. With God's Spirit, Holy Spirit, we can make anything happen, even family peace and peace in Jerusalem. The how is not clear.
Two of the Epiphany lectionary texts have secrets! The secret in Ephesians and Matthew seems to be that there are many more of God's children than contained in Israel, more than just Jews! The magi are not Jews, yet they know the ancient prophecies and receive dream messages from the same God that Paul later experiences as inspiring. Their secret is that they are to protect the baby. At the same time, Herod is afraid of losing power and, according to Matthew, immediately begins to protect his future but keeps his fears and his dreadful plans secret.
Two texts (Psalms and Isaiah) are right out front with their message! No secret for them! God will someday fix Jerusalem; it will be so well ruled and so beautiful that everyone will praise God. People's needs will be met and rulers will be benevolent. The prophet and the poet are blatant in their optimistic expectations that Yahweh would intervene in human affairs. God's action would be obvious and everyone would be delighted. Each person alert for the Holy One would have an epiphany! For some, it is difficult to entertain the idea that Divinity steps into human time and sets things right. Nevertheless, we know the whole story: Jesus, as an adult, taught that we should work for and expect justice and peace.
The sky gazers, attuned to the movement of the stars and their own dreams, guard the baby and their hope. Epiphany means to see clearly. God is clearly seen at work in the sky and with the magi who knew the scriptures well enough to look for a new leader -- a leader sent by the Creator of the stars. Van Dyke's tale of The Other Wise Man is a nice story to consider. (Google it for audio.) In van Dyke's imagination, the One to be sought and served is not clearly manifest. One magi misses his date with the others and his opportunity to see the baby; he spends his life looking for the One. He is in Jerusalem the day Jesus is crucified and realizes he is too late. In this story, God is "clearly hidden" in people who desperately need life's necessities.
Contemporary Affirmation (Unison)
The Bible story of the wise men seeking a king is our story; we seek Divine affirmation and guidance.
The baby they found is our vulnerable and growing experience with the Holy.
The secret they kept is our personal promises to the invisible Spirit.
The gifts they offered are our talents, our resources, and our loyalty.
Their journey back to their own cities is our journey across this earth, aware of being surrounded by Holy Spirit and desiring to make this world a kinder place.
We are not alone. God surrounds us and we are content as we walk with the Holy One. Amen. Let it be so!
Offertory Statement (Leader)
Wise people still follow stars and sing with angels! Wise people are good neighbors and generous with their resources. Wise people participate with the Spirit for the goodness of all people. It may not be gold, frankincense, or myrrh that we put in the offering plates. But whatever your gift is, it is acceptable.
Doxology
While Shepherd Watched Their Flocks (v. 6), tune: CHRISTMAS
All glory be to God on high and to the earth be peace;
Good will to all from highest heaven begin and never cease!
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
For all the gifts that are ours, for the strength to make a difference in our community, we thank you. Amen.
Intercessory Prayer (Leader or Readers)
God of Dreamers -- look at this world. See the messes we have made with our greed. See the children who are sold into slavery. See the poverty in America and in Africa and in every nation. We need dreams to compel leaders and ourselves to find a way to feed all the hungry and house all the homeless. We need wisdom to empower us to act now to bring something of your kingdom to earth. Move our elected leaders and the leaders of the whole world to lead the way to justice and peace.
God of Star Watchers -- we like to think ourselves among the wise and gifted. So we turn to you for light for our darkness; we turn to you for healing for our bodies and souls. Let us be alert for epiphanies! Let us use our gifts to provide nurture and companionship to those bereft of loveliness.
God of Secrets -- we are glad you have not withheld yourself from humankind. We are grateful you have made our bodies homes for your Spirit. As we recognize the systems of nature, we are glad that you have not kept secret your imagination for we see it everywhere in the universe! We do not understand how evolution continues to change this planet, but we do know that we have been negligent with the waters, the air, and the land. Work in us until we demand that industry develop a conscience and protect the hills and forests, waters and air.
God of Life -- we pray for peace throughout this global village. Show yourself to violent people as the resource for neighborliness and benevolent power. May guns and rockets, land mines and hand grenades be turned into tools for every one to grow food. Give solace to families whose children and parents have been killed or maimed in war. Let all humankind be makers of peace. Amen.
Benediction (Leader)
May the Creator of stars light your way;
May angels sing with you sad and joyful;
May you hear the voice of the Holy Spirit whispering guidance;
May you be wise enough to protect the Holy within you.
Go from this place feeling at peace with yourself and with God who keeps divine intentions secret but continually demonstrates love for you.
Be who you are, do what you can, and want what you have. Amen.
