Lectionary Worship Workbook, Series IV, Cycle C
Soul Motion
A single song is being inflected through all the colorations of the human choir.
The way to become human is to recognize the lineaments of God in all the wonderful modulations of the face [of humankind].
-- Joseph Campbell, The Hero With a Thousand Faces
Call To Worship (Leader)
We are in sanctuary -- together, removed from the world, secluded for a while.
We have brought with us our burdens and anxieties.
We've come here with our hopes and thanksgivings.
For one hour, we can intentionally, consciously set all this aside knowing we can pick it up again as we return to our worlds.
Make space in your mind and psyche for the Spirit -- space for changing systems, for rising energy, and for flaming audacity.
Listen for the God of grace and laughter.
Listen for new rhythms calling to you.
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
God of this Century -- we are aware that the images our ancestors used to make you "real" for themselves don't open our imaginations to you. There must be a myriad of ways we can experience your empowering presence, a million ways we can perceive you with all our senses! Our minds are alert; our souls are eager. We sing and pray, listen and speak our appreciation for your dynamic presence. We are ready to imagine you for our times. Amen.
Call To Confession (Leader)
Newness of life is available to us as we let go of burdensome memories and painful replays of what might have been. In these few moments, we can reflect on who we are and where we are going. Pray with me and then carry on your conversation with God.
Community Confession (Unison)
God of Today -- disappointments and betrayals clutter our minds. Nasty words and bitterness hamper our relationships.
Belligerent attitudes get in the way of your grace.
Injustice and prejudices cloud our national priorities.
We regret these thoughts and behaviors; free us from guilt and shame.
Transform us individually and as a nation so our words and actions are consistent with your love. Amen.
Sermon Idea
When we wonder what enriches and satisfies the twenty-first-century soul, it is difficult to use Isaiah 6 as a model for gathered or private worship. The cosmology and anthropomorphism don't translate well for the technologically educated mind. A sermon title/theme might be: Soul Update. What symbols and images impel us to say, "Yes, I will be an active, hospitable home for the Holy," and "Yes, I will work for justice and mutuality in my home, my church, my nation, and the global village."
A satellite dish? Archetypal dreams? Athletic and movie images often have components that do not fit with Jesus' "commandments" to love yourself, your neighbor, your enemy, and the stranger. Technological games and sports often consume time and energy we might otherwise use for meditation or service activities. If resurrection is to be among our experiences, we must be open to non-traditional, non-classical options of inviting God to make us new.
Contemporary Affirmation (Unison)
God was in the beginning.
God is still present -- present for us 21st century people! We will learn to recognize God's creating, inspiring, and empowering in post-modern images.
God is imaginative beyond our human guidelines!
Jesus taught in the first century and was murdered for confronting government and religious authorities. His teachings continue to challenge us.
Holy Spirit is a divine presence within human beings and in the cosmos.
We gather as seekers attempting to understand humanity and divinity. We care for each other so we are not alone. Amen!
Offertory Statement (Leader)
The exchange of energies within your body and soul is between you and God.
The exchange of money from our wallets to the church budget is between us and God, too; together we support ministry on this street corner.
Doxology
As A Chalice Cost Of Gold (v. 4), tune: INWARD LIGHT
When I dance or chant your praise, when I sing a psalm or hymn,
When I teach your loving ways, let my heart add its Amen.
Let each cherished outward rite thus reflect your inward light.
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
Great God -- in gratitude for your loving presence, we give you our whole selves! Use us and our talents and our money to make your grace tangible on our street. Amen.
Intercessory Prayers (Leader or Readers)
Thank you, Creating God, for the mysteries of the universe. Help us participate with you in protecting them from human greed and debris.
Thank you, Creating God, for the multiple nations and religions throughout the global village. May our words and our actions be consistent with your love.
Thank you, Eternal God, for creating us in your image. Stop the terror that ravishes our bodies and souls. Halt the wars that maim our children and devastate the land. Stop the injustice that breeds poverty, disease, and discontent.
Thank you, Healing God, for sufficient strength to endure each day, to learn new things, to hold on to goodness, and to let go of unhelpful ideas. Satisfy our hearts. Amen.
Benediction/Charge (Leader)
As you leave the sanctuary, be alert for all the variations of humankind. Listen for songs and laughter, tears and groans. Watch for the modulations of your own soul. Be aware that the living God cradles you and all creation! Serve with joy!
