The "3-Ds" that terrify us the most are disease,
deterioration, and death. Suddenly our lives are out of control.
We're sliding down the slippery slope, and there's nothing to
grab onto that will hold us permanently without further decline.
Sometimes panic or despair, at least resignation, start to take
over. The apostle Paul suggests that for those who seek it,
there's a different way to look at the "3-Ds." In 2 Corinthians
5, he suggests that our inevitable decline is the way to
celebration and glory. It's something like the elevator
principle. At one end of the cable is a huge weight. At the other
end is the passenger car. As the weight falls downward, the car
is lifted upward. In the same way, as our physical bodies
deteriorate downward, our spiritual selves are lifted upward to
the throne of grace.
