LECTIONARY WORSHIP AIDS
Series III, Cycle A
CALL TO WORSHIP
Come as a child to a Fatherly, Motherly God, expecting strong support and gentle nursing.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Provident God, you provide so many good things to sustain our life and health that we can never be grateful enough. Too often we complain about what we lack and are anxious when we are not sure that we will have what we need for the days ahead. Forgive undue apprehension about the needs of the body and neglect of the things of the spirit. Teach us the balanced life of your model Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
DECLARATION OF GOD'S FORGIVENESS
Hear the Good News! Our heavenly Parent's goodness knows no bounds. Friends, believe the Good News! In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
EXHORTATION
Strive first to be a good subject of the dominion of God and the best the world has to offer will be given to you as well.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Your goodness, O God, knows no bounds. Increase our goodness beyond its present limits to higher stages of maturity, that our love and forgiveness may become more nearly like that of your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
First Creator, we see the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet you feed them sometimes with our help. Great Teacher, you renew our understanding of parables in nature and assure us that we are of even more value than flowers and birds. Spirit of God, you renew our shrinking faith, beautifying our inner nature and preparing us for eternity. All thanks and praise be given to you, O God, for lilies of the field and the promise of life eternal. Amen.
PRAYER OF DEDICATION
Provident God, may our support of your church reflect our faith in the future you prepare for all who love you and our trust in you to care for us as well as the lesser creatures of earth and sea and sky; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
PSALM 131
O LORD, my heart is not lifted up,
my eyes are not raised too high;
I do not occupy myself with things
too great and too marvelous for me.
But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a weaned child with its mother;
my soul is like the weaned child that is with me.
O Israel, hope in the LORD from this time on and forevermore.
Come as a child to a Fatherly, Motherly God, expecting strong support and gentle nursing.
