Easter Surprise

Object:
Five paper bags: four containing Easter candy and one that is empty.
Message: Do any of you receive Easter baskets on Easter morning? That was one of the customs we had at our house when I was growing up. We would always wake up early on Easter morning to go to the sunrise service. Yet no matter how early we got up, there was always an Easter basket waiting for us. My parents would wait until we went to sleep and then put out the baskets filled with our favorite kinds of Easter candy.
Today I brought along several bags, each containing a surprise that you might receive on Easter. When I open the bag, you tell me if this is one of the things you have received in your Easter baskets. (Open each of the bags and allow the children to respond to each type of candy or surprise.)
Now there is only one bag remaining. Let's look in this one to see what it contains. Wait a minute; this bag is empty! Why would anyone get excited about something that is empty on Easter Sunday?
Actually that is the most exciting news of all! When the disciples and Jesus' other followers came to the tomb on that first Easter it was empty. Jesus' body was not there, because He had come back to life again! That is why we have something to celebrate on Easter Sunday. God has conquered death. Jesus was not still in the tomb. It was empty because He is alive. He promises that we will live forever with Him in heaven because He has conquered the grave!
