Aids To The Psalms
Exploring The Message
Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty firmament!
Praise him for his mighty deeds;
praise him according to his surpassing greatness!
Praise him with trumpet sound;
praise him with lute and harp!
Praise him with tambourine and dance;
praise him with strings and pipe!
Praise him with clanging cymbals;
praise him with loud clashing cymbals!
Let everything that breathes praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord!

The Singer has been commissioned to write a new hymn. She is
delighted with the opportunity but has found it a difficult
assignment. She has lots of ideas, but as soon as she begins to
compose she gets interrupted. She sits down at the piano and the
telephone rings. It is a friend who needs advice with a personal
problem; sometime later she returns to the keyboard. Before she
has completed a measure, the doorbell rings. There is a person
soliciting funds for a charity she believes in; after careful
consideration, she makes a donation. On her way back to the piano
she notices it is time to leave for a committee meeting at her
church. Hours later she returns home in time to change clothes
and to leave with friends for a meal and a concert. They have a
wonderful time sharing food, conversation and music. When she
returns home she apologizes to God for not writing her song of
praise. As she drifts off to sleep
she hears God say that she did indeed write and sing her song of
praise that day and it was very good.
Reflection
This final song of praise in the Psalms excites our
imagination. We see all the different types of instruments that
can be used to praise God, traditional and non-traditional
instruments. We can almost hear even non-instruments singing
God's praise. Steam engines, clacking computer keys, volcanoes,
sonic booms, rush hours, birds in a meadow, emergency sirens,
soft winds, the crash of tin cans and other materials thrown into
a recycling truck, the purr of a petted cat, all manner of things
that sing God's praises. The activities in our lives praise God
just as well as the greatest song of prayer. Everything that
breathes is to praise the Lord. Our living and breathing, all our
actions, are intended to give praise.
