Easter 6
Poems
A GOSPEL TREASURY
Poems Based on Lectionary Gospels
What a wondrous companion is Jesus,
who has called me to come as his friend.
He has promised to be with me always,
and to stand by me, world without end.
In his presence is peace everlasting.
And with him I’m secure as can be.
For I know that no evil can harm me.
And from fear I shall always be free.
When I talk with him he always hears me
and I know that he cares how I feel.
So with him I can dare to be open
and my innermost thoughts I reveal.
Just to know he is always beside me
brings me joy that just can’t be expressed.
So together we do many errands
and I see many lives he has blest.
And whenever I might disappoint him
or have done what he cannot approve,
he will always forgive me completely
and welcome me back to his love.
It was Jesus who made this arrangement.
It was Jesus who chose me as friend.
So I know I shall cherish him always
and follow him through to the end.
When my life comes at last to completion
and they lay my remains neath the sod,
I can think of no finer inscription
than that, 'Here lies a friend of his God.'
who has called me to come as his friend.
