Object:
Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you."
-- John 20:19
Three times in this passage Jesus greeted his disciples with "Peace be with you." The first time, they were hidden behind locked doors in fear. The second time, he offered these words in the process of his commissioning them for their ministry. The third time, he said "Peace be with you" was in response to Thomas' doubts. What is this peace that calms our fears, empowers us for ministry, and overcomes our doubts? How do we receive the peace of Christ in our lives?
In the first instance, though they were filled with fear, they gathered together. When we are filled with fear, we need to come together. It is when two or three are gathered together that Christ promises to be present. It is in community that our fears are overcome. The second time was when they heard what God was asking of them. Too often our lives are aimless or have goals that diminish us. If we want the peace of Christ, we need to again take time to hear the call of God in our lives. Vocation is far more important than simply holding a job. We need to feel our lives filled with a God-given purpose.
The third time Jesus spoke his peace was when Thomas was honest about his doubts with other believers. Our doubts are the cutting edge of our faith journey. The church needs to be a place where people feel safe to voice their doubts. When we voice our doubts not in arrogance but in honest seeking, Christ shows us the wounds by which we are healed and convicted. It is in such healing that we experience the blessing of God. "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe."
