Expression: Down to the sea in ships
Location: Psalm 107:23-24
Verse: They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; these see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.
The sailor holding watch on his ship late at night felt lonely. However, this feeling was soon abandoned as he began to direct his thinking to the beauty around him.
The sailor observed the vastness of the open sea. He watched the power of the rhythmic waves and thought that no human hand could reach down and hold them back. The white water crest behind the ship was a painting on the horizon. The moonlight stretched across the water for miles. All of it was under a great canopy of stars. This sailor was observing the power of God in action.
Soon after, in a letter to his mother back home, the sailor related some of these feelings. He ended his letter by telling his mother that he had been made aware that God could also still the waves and calm the storm in his life. He then signed the letter, "With love, your son." We can imagine what a wonderful effect this had on his mother, who also sometimes felt that loneliness and anxiety.
