Jacob was looking for a wife, and father Isaac had suggested he go to Pandanaram, locate his mother's brother Laban, and, perhaps, marry one of his daughters, a first cousin incidentally. On his way, Jacob was somewhere between Beershaba and Haran when darkness fell and he lay down to sleep.
That night, there beneath the stars, with a stone for his pillow, Jacob dreamed. It wasn't unusual, I suppose, for a young man on his way to his wedding to have dreams of one kind or another. Jacob's dream, however, was quite unusual and of great importance to him.
