The Doctor For Sin

Object: a thermometer, a heating pad, and a bad cough
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought to share with you a few things that I have been using this week. (bring out the heating pad and thermometer) I have had all of the aches and pains that a person have and still be living. In addition to this I have been coughing. (give them an example of your very best cough) When I cough it hurts right down to my toes. I don't know which are worse, the days or the nights. Have any of you been sick this week? (let them answer) I just feel awful and I feel doubly bad because it is so nice outside with the beautiful sunshine. You don't feel so badly when the weather is bad outside and you are sick, but when the weather is good and you feel ill, then you feel twice as bad.
I don't seem to be getting any better. Can you think of anything else that I can do besides take my temperature and use the heating pad? (wait until someone suggests that you see a doctor) Why should I see a doctor? I have seen lots of doctors and they look just like other people. (let them tell you what a doctor does for the sick) Oh, I see! The doctor will help me to get well. He knows how to cure me from my sickness.
That must be what Jesus was talking about when he said that the sick people need a doctor but that people who are healthy do not need a doctor. Only he meant something a little different. He was not talking just about people with coughs and colds. He was talking about people with sins. How many of you like people who sin a lot? (let them answer) Do you know anyone who cheats, steals, lies, and tries to hurt people? Are those people your friends? (let them answer) Do you wish that they were in church with you this morning? (let them answer) Probably not. But where should they be? (let them answer) Isn't this the place that people learn not to cheat, lie, steal, and hurt others? Isn't this where boys and girls come to learn about Jesus and how to love and forgive, and help one another? (let them answer) Jesus spent a lot of time with people whom you and I don't like, and he changed them into good people. I wish that all of the bad people in the world, or the ones who we think are bad, would come and learn about Jesus, and I wish that boys and girls like you would teach them.
If you are sick, you want to go to a doctor. If you are filled with sin and it causes you to hate instead of love, then you need Jesus. He can make the sin--sick people better just as a doctor can help you get rid of a cough. That's something to remember and something for all of us to think about.
