Call To Worship
Leader: Praise the Lord, my soul! O Lord, my God, how great you are!
People: You are clothed with majesty and glory; you cover yourself with light!
Leader: Lord, you have made so many things!
People: How wisely you made them all!
Leader: I will sing to the Lord all my life;
People: as long as I live I will sing praises to my God.
All: Praise the Lord, my soul!
Collect
O God, Creator and Sustainer of the universe, the best minds in our scientific community keep probing the depths of your creation trying to answer the questions you put to Job. Each generation adds to our knowledge, yet only adds emphasis to what we already know. How marvelous is your creation; how wonderful are the works of your hands. We gaze at the heavens through our powerful telescopes and ask again: "What are human beings that you are mindful of them?"
In our worship draw near to us, God, and as we humble ourselves in your presence, make us keenly aware of our responsibility as stewards of your creation. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we acknowledge that sometimes we act as if we know it all, when in truth we know very little. Forgive our arrogance and grant us wisdom. Draw us nearer to Christ that through him we may grow daily in our understanding and knowledge of you, Almighty God. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"Holy God, We Praise Thy Name"
"All Things Bright And Beautiful"
Proper 24/Ordinary Time 29
Sunday between October 16 and October 22 inclusive
Second Lesson: Hebrews 5:1-10
Theme: The Source Of Eternal Salvation
Call To Worship
Leader: Let us test and examine our ways, and return to the Lord!
People: Let us lift up our hearts to God.
Leader: With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high?
People: He has showed you what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.
Collect
O God, when we cry for help in time of trouble, you answer us in love. As we hear your word and sing your praise may we enjoy the fullness of salvation by the Most High, through your lowly Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord and the source of our eternal salvation. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
O God, no one likes to suffer, and we are no exception. Without the power of your Holy Spirit we could not endure it, but with your help we have faith that even though it is unpleasant we can walk through the valley of the shadow of death. Help us to go beyond endurance when suffering comes, to the point where we can use it to learn valuable lessons. We pray in Jesus'Òname. Amen.
Hymns
"Ask Ye What Great Thing I Know"
"Trust And Obey"
Proper 24/Ordinary Time 29
Sunday between October 16 and October 22 inclusive
Gospel Lesson: Mark 10:35-45
Theme: True Greatness
Call To Worship
Do you expect the seat of honor at a banquet?
Do you volunteer for the sake of recognition?
Do you go the extra mile in your place of employment looking for a raise or promotion?
Come, let us worship our God, and learn what he has to say about "greatness."
Collect
Almighty God, we come seeking your wisdom. Frankly, there are still some things we don't fully understand -- such as: "the last shall be first," "lose your life in order to find it," "to be great you must be a servant." Enlighten us, Lord, and by your Spirit enable us to be faithful followers of your way. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Heavenly Father, we get our values and priorities mixed up. We seek success rather than opportunities for service. We expect others to recognize us rather than our being quick to see the needs of others. You can straighten us out, Lord, by the working of your Holy Spirit. Come and take control of our lives, we pray, in Jesus'Òname. Amen.
Hymns
"Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah"
"Ye Servants Of God"
