"In love's service, only the wounded can serve," wrote Thornton Wilder in a three-minute play inspired by the biblical story about the Pool of Bethesda. The play is about a doctor who suffers from an incurable wound. He waits with other sick people at the Pool. He hopes to be healed by being the first to get into the water after an angel stirs it. However, the angel says to him: "Draw back, physician; healing is not for thee. Without your wound, where would your power be? It is your very sorrow that puts kindness in your face and makes your low voice tremble into the hearts of men.
