Alan Paton's book, Cry, The Beloved Country, suggests a valid answer to racism. Briefly, the black preacher's son in a province of South Africa had left the countryside to obtain work in the big city, only to fall into evil ways and to kill a white man. A striking fact of the matter was that the man he murdered was the son of the white landowner back in the same valley from which the black youth had come.
The redeeming factor came from the one who had lost his son.
