Communion Prayers for the Church Year and Pastoral Occasions
Object:
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is good to give God thanks and praise.
We thank you God that through the ages you have called for women and men of faith to be your people.
You called to Abraham and Sarah to leave their home and found a great nation.
You called to Moses to free your people from slavery and Miriam to speak your word as you led them to the promised land.
You called to Jeremiah, Isaiah, and the other prophets to tell us of your law and condemn our sinful ways.
You called through Jesus for people to follow your way. Peter, James, John, and the other fishermen followed. Matthew, Mark, and others also answered your call.
You called to Mary and Martha, Joanna and Mary Magdalene, and many others to be your disciples and they came with their gifts and talents.
In every age and in every place you have called to men and women to follow your will and bear your truth to the world.
In every age you have shown your goodness and mercy through the women and men you call to be your people.
You continue to call, gracious Lord. In this generation you have called us to be both disciples and apostles. You have called us to be both a beacon to the nations and servants in the world.
Today, as your people, we reaffirm our answer; before your table we dedicate our lives to you.
For it is at this table Jesus took bread, broke it, and gave it to his followers saying,
"This is my body which is given for you. Each time you do this, remember me."
This is where he also took the cup and shared it with his friends saying:
"This cup is the new covenant God has made with you in my blood. Each time you do this and drink from this cup, remember me."
Send, we pray, the Holy Spirit upon this bread and cup, that we might be refreshed and inspired through your gifts of life and salvation, that we might continue to learn as your disciples and continue to proclaim as your apostles, for we ask and answer in Jesus' name.
Amen.
And also with you.
