Variations on the phrase, "cast the first stone," come from
Jesus' challenge to a hostile mob that wanted Jesus to condemn a
woman to death by stoning, since she had just been caught in the
act of adultery. He did not say, "Let he who has never committed
adultery, cast the first stone." He did say, "Let he who is
without sin, cast the first stone." (John 8:6) Frankly, we prefer
to be barred from "executing justice" only when we've committed
the same sin. That leaves us free to "fling at will," when we
