Commitment to a calling
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Based Upon Cycle C Lectionary Gospels
Gospel Theme:
Commitment to a calling
Gospel Note:
The devil's temptation of Jesus in the desert, as depicted by Luke, is a veritable ''battle of the Titans,'' each of whom rallies Scripture to support his case. In the end, the devil departs ''until an opportune time'' (which for Luke means the pre-Passion period), having been put off by Jesus' single-minded commitment to his mission and ministry.
Liturgical Color:
Purple
Suggested Hymns:
A Mighty Fortress Is Our God
God The Father, Be Our Stay
Lift Every Voice And Sing
Praise To The Lord, The Almighty
Where Charity And Love Prevail
God Loved The World

Lent 1
The tension is real, Lord! We can feel it.
There is a battle going on!
A battle for our souls.
Sometimes the field of battle is so camouflaged
it is passed over virtually unnoticed.
A decision here. A value judgment there.
Give and take. Live and let live.
Self-preservation is more appealing to us
than self-sacrifice.
The mere hint of hunger sends us to the
marketplace.
It is easy for us to build up a false
sense of security.
We know that your word is Truth, Lord,
more essential than bread.
So many truths clamor for our allegiance
we tend to become easily distracted,
even lost.
Could this be what is meant by
an Opportune Time?
The Lenten journey lies ahead. Guide our
footsteps as we follow Jesus to the cross.
There, the field of battle is clearly visible.
There, the tension will give way to peace.
Amen.
